New Artspace at 229 High St
A new city-centre space for the company.
Last Autumn we seized an opportunity to present 1977 in an abandoned retail premises in Swansea High Street. At first it seemed it odd thing to do, but as the show changed in response to its new surroundings we began to feel that we were on to something. The resulting performance was a more distinctive experience for audiences and a more interesting and challenging one for us. We were working with Swansea Creative Hub , who saw the potential for the space and offered us a longer-term opportunity to work there. The Hub has a simple philosophy:
"Create a space that’s minimal and flexible and allows for ease of communication. Put it in the heart of the city, make it accessible, interesting, open to all. Encourage people from all creative backgrounds to mix, merge and clash in equal measure. Then see what happens."
So Volcano@229 was born. We moved in in April and have been busy with a few essential adaptations, fixtures and fittings. 229 will have a new-look shopfront in July. In May we invited a diverse group of Swansea artists, educators and creative practitioners in to have a look around and imagine all sorts of things that might happen here. We are currently working on a strategy for the space that will encompass uses from supporting up-and-coming companies to film clubs and social events to commercial hires.
If you have a project that you think might work with Volcano at 229, or are interested in hiring the space, please contact Fern Smith using the details on our contact page .
