The Observer Review
Over at Theatre Workshop, Swansea's Volcano Theatre is doing to Ibsen
what Charles Marowitz once did to Shakespeare. Under the direction of
Nigel Charnock (ex-DV8), the physical theatre company takes randomly
selected passages from Brand, A Doll's House, The Master
Builder, Little Eyolf and When We Dead Awaken, cuts
them up and treats them as if they were a dance score. Conversations
are fragmented, spliced, repeated, speeded up and bashed into shape.
Some of the more straightforward sequences could do with paring down
but, at its silly and abstract best, the show sets a standard that more
earnest deconstructors on the Fringe would do well to equal.
