Macbeth—Director's Cut

Concept: Paul Davies and Fern Smith
Directed by Nigel Charnock

Volcano's Macbeth has shocked audiences in the home counties of England and delighted those who have craved a truly modern interpretation of one of Shakespeare's darkest plays.

Macbeth—Director's Cut is a terrifying and disturbing tale of man's inhumanity to man, of a human nature indelibly marked by murder, greed and lust. Macbeth the Butcher and his fiend-like Queen - the most infamous killer couple in history. The poetic beauty and repellent horror of Shakespeare's nihilistic tragedy are central to this production of erotic and claustrophobic intensity.

This two-hander focuses on the deadly intense relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth: stripping the play bare of its historical and regal cushioning, it draws parallels with contemporary murderous couples such as Fred and Rosemary West.

Macbeth—Director's Cut was premiered at Unity Theatre, Liverpool in late 1998. One of the company's most talked-about and most travelled shows, it has toured extensively in the UK and has visted Switzerland, Canada, Greece, Slovakia, Russia, Spain, Ireland and Sri Lanka.

"... it brings one closer to the dark heart of the play than many more orthodox versions … performed with dauntless energy by Davies and Smith and persuasively suggests a timeless link between murder and marital passion." The Guardian 1999
