VOLCANO
PEOPLE
Volcano Theatre Company is:
Paul
Davies | Artistic Director
Paul
holds a doctorate in politics and a black belt in karate. Perhaps as
a consequence of these activities he once nearly died from an asthma
attack. Still in recovery, he now drinks too much coffee. He lives on
the Gower but has not yet learned to surf. He is, with Fern Smith, one
of the founding members of Volcano. He has performed in many of their
shows, written three plays and directed a number of others. He has also
directed work in Montreal and Croatia and taught in numerous academies
around the world. He died quite early in John Hardwick's film To
Have and to Hold and most recently has written some melancholic
verse for Catherine Bennett's film, My Desert.

Fern Smith | Artistic Director
Fern obtained a degree in Psychology at the University of Wales Swansea
and an MA in Industrial Relations at Warwick University. Fern is a co-founder
and one of the two Artistic Directors of Volcano Theatre Company. Since
its inception she has been a core performer, director and teacher with
the company. She has worked as a freelance performer/collaborator with
the Charnock Company and Improbable Theatre, featured in Film Four's
film of Tony Harrison's Prometheus, John Hardwick's film 33x
Round The Sun and in Steven Berkoff's Messiah. She has directed
freelance projects and shows for Oxford Youth Theatre, Lyric Theatre
Hammersmith and The Network. Recent projects include: This Imaginary

and Campaigns Manager at Sherman Cymru. She has worked in arts marketing
for over five years, previous employers include; Sgript Cymru, the Wales

Claudine
Conway | Marketing Manager
Claudine joined Volcano in May 2000, and is responsible for administration,
marketing, web design and some other stuff too onerous to mention. She
has taught English Literature at The University of Wales Swansea, and
has previously worked for the Aberystwyth Jazz Festival and the Camberley
Working Men's Club. Claudine has a BA and an MA in English from the
University of Wales Aberystwyth, and is unlikely ever to finish a PhD
in 18th-century fiction. Never mind. Instead she administrates a non-profit
Sausage Collective and is somewhat nerdy when it comes to bicycles.
