Contemporary Woven Art Inspired by Sound
UWTSD Swansea College of Art and Volcano Theatre’s Stationside Gallery Window Space
This innovative exhibition explores the concept of sound, extending the horizons of woven tapestry away from the two-dimensional historical document towards an imaginative, multi- disciplinary approach. The emphasis is on sound and humanity and the internal processes of the mind and body in response to sound and rhythm.
The interpretations of the theme include exploring human voices in international conflict, inter-generational and internalised dialogues, sound distortion through ageing, disability, distance or mis-perception.
The work at Volcano is by Louise Martin and is titled “Whispered Words”. It measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 metres. The rest of the Sound & Weave exhibition is at UWTSD Swansea College of Art, Foyer, Dynevor Building, De la Beche Street, Swansea, SA1 3EU.
Louise’s own words from the exhibition catalogue read:
WHISPERED WORDS
Conversational pieces between grandmother and granddaughter
Words, and the quietness between, hang in the air, in memory
like the vibration of words when first spoken.
These words are able to drift, rotate in the air,
connected by a fine continuous yarn,
each conversation becoming part of a whole.
A choir which resonated across time.
